This unique I-Beam bridge is a notorious single lane overpass on the Iowa State University campus. As a result, the bridge is controlled by stoplights to allow traffic to safely pass below.
It was built in 1900 to cross a livestock area, but was later converted to road use. As part of the road use conversion, the I-Beams were encased in concrete to create a ballasted deck bridge. It appears that this occurred before 1938.
The substructures are a standardized stone design. A similar bridge once existed nearby over Stange Road, but was replaced 1962.
The author has ranked this bridge as being moderately significant, due to the common design, with a unique twist.
Fortunately, this bridge remains in good condition. The photo above is an overview.
The structure can be accessed from the road below. The bridge may be doomed in the long term. As a traffic bottleneck, it is believed that the University and the city will work together to replace this bridge in the long run.
